remnants of an unraveled day
today completely unraveled. woke up wondering how on earth i was going to embellish autoquiltography one without ruining the back. felt like such a boopa that i hadn’t considered this before. so i paid bills and did other not-so-fun things, hoping a good dose of calvinistic accomplishment would buoy me right into a solution.
but no.
when that didn’t work, i went to the fabric store with daughter,
and when THAT didn’t work,
i did what any girl would do: spent the rest of the day bloghopping. still not clear about what to do with autoquiltography one, but i hopped onto something rather exciting: on-demand fabric printing. you’ll create your design, send it to spoonflower in the size/resolution required, tell them how much fabric you want, and presto-magico, they’ll print it for you. scroll on down to the 3/21 post for more info.) oh, just imagine the possibilities.
and now, i’ll try to conjure up some possibilities so i can finish off autoquiltography one. considered doing double-sided embellishment, but that would look like boils on the back of autoquiltography one, and we can’t have that. i can’t just run the thread between the front and back cause there’s so much stitching, and that means no room for even the smallest of needles. maybe i’ll sketch/trace designs on tear-away stabilizer, stitch embellishments on that, then treat finished bits as appliques and attach to quilt front. think that would work?

Sat here doing my best to visualize … realized you wouldn’t have to stitch through all the layers, you could simply “hide” the beginning and ending of the threads under or within the applique itself. Was also wondering if you could supplement the applique pieces with a bit of judicious fabric painting?
how about not worriny about it and adding another back later?
acey, hadn’t thought about painting. not that i could, mind you. sketching and painting - unless we’re talking a wall - are not my strong suit. but that’s certainly something that could be used to touch up the edges should i take the applique route. thanks for the idea.
jude, how come it sounds so much better/doable/sensible when it comes out of your mouth than when it comes out of my head????? went through 47 pages of vintage tablecloths on ebay after reading your suggesting, looking for one that matches the front. even if i can’t find one, i could do a solid background and fuse it to the back, i’m guessing. thanks for giving me something to think about. have been feeling like a real clumph head for not thinking about it earlier.
